After the financial crisis 2008, housing supply surged and mortgage costs dropped, making buying 12% cheaper than renting. However, with current high mortgage rates and low housing inventory, the ratio has reversed.

Today’s average monthly mortgage payment is 52% higher than the typical monthly rent on an apartment, according to data from commercial real estate firm, CBRE.
