Saturday Thoughts: Setting high standards for yourself 🙏🏻
As I reflect on the first 5 months of 2021 while on my morning routine, I watched a video of MMA fighters training for their upcoming fights (some of you know Ive become a huge fan during the pandemic). One of the quotes by struck me - “I always said, whenever the standard is high, you’ll rise to that standard, whenever the standard is low, you’ll remain where youre at. I’m training to become the first Italian UFC champion”.
Alot of people have dreams and aspirations to do great things, but for many of us, there is often a big gap between our expectations and reality. Expectations can usually be broken out into three buckets:
1) What other people around us think we should do
2) What society thinks we should do
3) What we believe we should and can do
For me, I’ve always believed the third was the most important - what we believe we can accomplish, often times finding someone who has done what you want to do, and then go doing it.
Mental toughness needs to be trained just like all other aspects like physical, emotional, and spiritual training. You’re not training to impress others or compare yourself to other peoples expectations and standards, you are training to become a better version of yourself than yesterday, that is the most important.
Whether in your job, business, relationships, MMA fights, you can look yourself in the mirror and say “im a better version of myself than yesterday” then you are a step ahead in the right direction.
One of my favorite quotes by “when under pressure, we dont rise to the level of out expectations, we fall to the level of our training.” So on this weekend, lets go out there and train fam 👊
