𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀.

And I mean that literally.

The story of 411 E. Main Street goes back more than 125 years. The property was purchased in 1899 by Civil War veteran John William Johnson and his wife Addie, the daughter of Plainfield founder Elias Hadley.

A few years later, it became the longtime home of Walter “Ab” Rushton, a local undertaker who was the first in Hendricks County to use an automobile instead of a horse-drawn hearse.
His business eventually became what we know today as Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home.

Since then, the house has been a collectible glassware store called The Yesterday House, Damar Services’ first group home, and eventually a private residence once again.

And wait until you see what it looks like 𝗡𝗢𝗪.

So much of the character is still here: original woodwork, pocket doors, hardwood floors and the original fireplace, alongside a beautifully updated kitchen and modern living spaces.

I’m hosting an Open House this Saturday, and honestly, this is a fun one to see even if you’re just a Plainfield history nerd who’s always wondered what’s inside that old house on Main Street. 😊

I am reading a book set in Australia and learned that what we often call an "in-law suite", Australians sometimes call a "granny flat". Which I found delightful! 😂
