New Era Homes built this custom luxury townhome in Indianola for my clients. The ceilings were high, the finishes were deluxe, and the fit and finish was immaculate. As someone who's spent the majority of my career in the construction field, I really appreciate quality and attention to detail.

Fair warning if we ever tour a house together: I am going to walk straight through it and out the back door.

I am a backyard guy. Kitchens can be redone. Paint is a weekend. But you cannot add fifty-year-old trees, you cannot make a lot bigger, and you cannot move the neighbor's garage. The yard is the one part of a house that is what it is.

This one is 4625 NE 31st St in Des Moines, and it stopped me in my tracks. Three quarters of an acre, shade from trees that have been here longer than any of us, and room to run. Recently updated and move-in ready, with an oversized detached garage for all the extra storage life brings.

Two of my listings this year, same story: the outbuilding did a lot of the work.

A detached garage or a solid shed is not just nice-to-have, they’re a necessity. Buyers in the Des Moines come with a mower, a snowblower, bikes, a boat, or a truck that does not fit in a one-stall garage. When a house has somewhere to put all of that, it gets more showings, and the offers come in stronger. Appraisers give credit for it too, especially a garage with power and a good roof.

If you are selling and you have one, clean it out, sweep it, and let it show. If you are thinking about adding one, a basic shed on a level pad is one of the few projects that comes close to paying for itself.
