Whether it’s someone who grabs your mail when you’re out of town, checks in on you when you’re under the weather, or simply waves to you from across the driveway, those connections are what turn a street into a community.

As a Senior Real Estate Specialist, when I help clients transition to new neighborhoods, we don't just look at the houses. We look at the community. Having a support network nearby is the key to living independently and happily for years to come.

If you don’t see me running around Iowa City as much as usual this week, there’s a good reason: I just had knee surgery on Monday!

As I navigate my own recovery, it has made me incredibly grateful for smart home features. Simple details like a zero-step entry, a walk-in shower with a bench, and wider doorways aren't just great for "aging in place." They are a complete lifesaver when you’re recovering from surgery, carrying heavy groceries, or pushing a grandkid's stroller!

When I help clients search for a new home—or prep their current one for the future—we look at it through the lens of longevity. A home should support you through all of life's seasons (including the ones involving crutches and ice packs!).

Summer in Iowa is beautiful, but it also comes with a never-ending list of home maintenance. Mowing the grass, weeding the garden, painting the deck, cleaning the gutters... the list goes on and on.

For many homeowners, a massive chunk of their retirement or free time is spent simply maintaining a property that has grown too large for their day-to-day needs.

Char and her sheep, Freckles, officially took the ring at the Johnson County Fair! Even with the Iowa summer heat in full force, we had such a wonderful turnout of family and friends cheering them on. There is truly nothing quite like fair week.

Did you know the Johnson County Fair tradition goes all the way back to October 1853? Back then, the very first fair was held right in the heart of Iowa City on Capitol Square (what we know today as the Pentacrest!). Over the last 170+ years, the fair has moved around—it was even held inside Kinnick Stadium for a stretch in the 1930s—before finding its permanent home at the current fairgrounds in 1952.

Watching Char and Freckles today reminds me that while the locations and weather might change, the spirit of community, hard work, and family support has been holding strong here for nearly two centuries.

Lane and Travis are officially on Day 6 of their RAGBRAI adventure! I dropped them off in Onawa last weekend to start the journey, and despite the high summer heat and those classic Iowa hills, they are having an absolute blast meeting wonderful people, eating great local food, and making unforgettable memories along the way.

For those who might not know, RAGBRAI stands for the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. It actually started back in 1973 when two Des Moines Register writers, John Karras and Donald Kaul, decided to ride their bikes across the state and invite readers to join them. What began as a simple 6-day ride with a few hundred people has turned into the oldest, largest, and most famous multi-day recreational bicycle tour in the world! Tradition says thousands of riders start by dipping their back bicycle tire in the Missouri River on the west side of Iowa, ride 400+ miles across our small towns, and finish by dipping their front tire in the Mississippi River on the east side. It is truly the ultimate showcase of Iowa hospitality, rolling hills, and community spirit.

So proud of Lane and Travis for tackling the miles! Keep pushing, guys—almost to the Mississippi! Are any of your friends or family riding RAGBRAI this year, or have you ever ridden it yourself? Drop a note to cheer them on!

When I talk to clients who are thinking about moving to a simpler, single-level home, the biggest hurdle usually isn't selling the house itself.

It's the stuff.

It’s the basement shelves, the attic boxes, and the closets filled with decades of memories, old school projects, and holiday decorations. The thought of sorting through it all can feel so overwhelming that it’s easier to just stay put—even if the stairs are getting harder to climb.

If you’ve felt this way, I want you to know two things:

1️⃣ You don't have to do it all in a weekend. Taking it one drawer, one box, or one room at a time makes a world of difference.
2️⃣ You don't have to do it alone. As an SRES (Senior Real Estate Specialist), I don't just put a sign in the yard. I coordinate with patient, gentle senior move managers and organizers who help you sort, donate, and pack at your own pace.

Your home should bring you peace, not a massive to-do list. Let's make your next chapter the easiest one yet.

After sharing Clara's big rock-climbing adventure over the weekend, it got me thinking about one of the absolute biggest reasons my clients decide to move.

It’s rarely about wanting a bigger kitchen or a newer roof. Usually, it’s about time.

When you’ve spent 20 or 30 years in a home, it’s full of beautiful memories. But if that home keeps you a long highway drive away from the school plays, the soccer tournaments, and the summer camp pick-ups, it might be time to re-evaluate.

As a Senior Real Estate Specialist, my favorite transitions to help with are "right-sizing" moves—helping wonderful people trade the high-maintenance upkeep of a large house for a simpler, beautiful home base that puts them right down the street from the people who matter most.

Because let's face it: being close enough to catch those proud moments in person is worth every single packed box.
