I remember hearing the story of the fishermen catching it years ago.
🎈👀 YOU’VE SEEN “FAT ALBERT” OVER THE FLORIDA KEYS… BUT DID YOU KNOW THE AIR FORCE ONCE HAD TO SHOOT ONE DOWN? 😳✈️

If you’ve spent much time in the Lower , you’ve probably looked up near and seen that enormous white balloon floating in the sky.
We’ve all called it “Fat Albert” for years.
But there’s a whole lot more to that big white balloon than most of us probably realized. Its history includes drug smugglers, Cuba, the Cold War—and one absolutely crazy day when Fat Albert ESCAPED. 🎈💨
🚨 THE DAY FAT ALBERT GOT AWAY
In August 1981, thunderstorms were approaching Cudjoe Key when crews tried bringing the aerostat down.
Fat Albert broke loose.
Four men on a pleasure boat reportedly tried grabbing its trailing tether—and their boat CAPSIZED. 😳
The eventually caught the cable and started towing Fat Albert back.
Then the cable broke AGAIN.
This time Fat Albert really took off.
It climbed to roughly 25,000 feet and drifted about 165 miles west of , where it became a danger to aircraft.
So what did they do?
The U.S. Air Force sent an F-4 Phantom fighter jet after it.
And they SHOT FAT ALBERT DOWN over the Gulf of Mexico. ✈️💥🎈
😂 You really can’t make up like this.
🇺🇸 SO WHY WAS FAT ALBERT HERE?
The military site at Cudjoe Key dates back to 1959, originally connected to tracking missiles over the Gulf.
By 1970, the Air Force was testing balloon-borne radar there under a project called “Seek Skyhook.”
The idea was pretty simple: put radar thousands of feet in the air and you can see low-flying airplanes that ground radar might miss over the horizon.
And that became VERY useful.
✈️🌊 DRUG SMUGGLERS KNEW HOW TO FLY LOW
During South Florida’s drug-smuggling era, pilots sometimes flew only a few hundred feet above the ocean trying to sneak under conventional radar.
Fat Albert could look down on them.
One government account described the aerostat detecting a suspicious DC-3 about 100 miles south of the Keys flying at only 400 feet—apparently unseen by other radar.
📺🇨🇺 AND THEN THERE WAS CUBA…
Here’s another part we bet some longtime Keys locals remember.
For years, equipment carried by the Cudjoe Key aerostat was also used to transmit programming toward .
So that big balloon we’ve all driven past was connected to drug interdiction, Cuba, the and monitoring the waters and skies south of the Keys.
Today the system is part of TARS—the Tethered Aerostat Radar System.

Think about this…
Kids who spotted Fat Albert from their parents’ back seat years ago are now driving their own kids—and maybe grandkids—down the .
And most of us probably never knew all the stories happening above our heads.
Drug runners. Cuba. Cold War broadcasts. A capsized boat.
And an F-4 Phantom sent to shoot Fat Albert out of the sky. 😂
Sometimes the things we’ve seen a thousand times have the best behind them.
