I had lunch today at the newly opened “Soar Café” which is housed in the former Anna’s Gift at 401 N. Mechanic Street, Jackson, MI. It operates in partnership with The Soar House, which is located in the former Women’s Club of Jackson. Both facilities have benefited from extensive renovations. I have not toured the former Women’s Club, but understand it is gorgeous and keeping with its historical flavor. The monies for the renovations and operating costs have been provided by the generosity of many charitable area organizations. The mission of Soar is to provide, counseling, healing, life skills, and employment to women survivors of trafficking, addiction, prison and sexual trauma. These are admirable and much needed services for our area. The founder, Michelle Cochran, who had experienced her own personal trauma, felt a call from God to, in her words, “get up.” The former Women’s Club provides housing for 1 year for women who are now benefiting from these services. In fact, I believe the café’s employees are residents of Soar House who are looking to turn their lives around. I found everyone upbeat and happy about their employment and to be a part of what I believe is an essential service for our community. I encourage our community to patronize Soar Café. Let’s help these women “Soar and Shine.”

Based on the recommendation of my brother, John White, I visited this newer Grass Lake Business, Asher Creek Creamery and Deli. I appreciated the fact that the new owner invested much labor into bringing back the historical charm of the building by refinishing the original floors, exposing the brick and restoring the tin ceiling. I met the owner, Mike and had a nice chat. I told him the last time I set foot in the building was when it was Freysinger Grocery, over 50 years ago. By the way, the Italian Sub was eccellente!!!!! Highly recommend.

Robert's dad, Lloyd, was my neighbor for over 30 years, so I was honored to assist the family upon his passing. Our families have a long history going back when Lloyd's mother babysat my mother in the 1920's! The Stoker's are an iconic Grass Lake Family who have made many positive contributions to the area.
