We chose our ranch location intentionally to be above the central valley fog, and we've been very glad to have sunny days and gorgeous sunsets the past few weeks 🌇 The fog is actually really beautiful from above and it looks like an ocean with hilltop "islands" poking through the fog layer. Gina-the-Goldendoodle doesn't care what the weather is, just as long as we'll throw her ball for her 🐕 💕

Millie and Mo say they've had just as many cute nose-to-nose photos as the horses so here are some favs from this year. Guest dogs usually love meeting our non-intimidating mini-donkeys, and people enjoy petting/feeding these cuties too 🐕 🐴💕

This year we've had so many cute nose-to-nose photos with guest dogs meeting our horses -- so I'm finally getting around to sharing these favs! Our new dun horse, Ranger, has completely settled in at the Ranch and learned from Rio to put his nose between fence rails to gently say "hi" and ask for some carrots. 🐕 🐴💕

💔😭🐕 We are still in shock and absolutely devastated after losing our beloved Cody to osteosarcoma (an awful and aggressive bone cancer) that had spread to his lungs. Animals are too good at hiding pain so we’ve been carefully managing Cody as he slowed down the past couple of years with arthritis (car steps, non-slip rugs, supplements, extra vet visits, healthy weight, regular light exercise,…). When a food-obsessed Lab stops eating and is lame on his LH leg, it’s an urgent trip to the vet where we got the terminal diagnosis. That was last Monday and we’ll skip the details of this horrific week frantically searching for hope but seeing such rapid decline that we had to say final goodbyes and end his suffering yesterday (Saturday). This has been stressful for Gina as well and she’ll miss her big brother but is coping with lots of attention and fetching.

Cody was such a happy boy and loved by everyone who met him so we know family, friends, and our ranch guests would want this news that is easier to type since I won’t be able to talk about it without crying for quite a while (and this is a key part of my grieving process). Cody was the 6th Lab we’ve loved and lost -- his blog page https://www.dogpony.com/blog/cody-corner.html has much of his story from his adoption through Golden Gate Lab Rescue https://www.facebook.com/LabRescue and highlights of his wonderful life with us. We never have enough time with our pets so we try to make the most of it and took Cody with us on many fun adventures including celebrating his 13th birthday just over a week ago with a short walk/swim at one of his favorite mountain lakes (Caples). Cody was an awesome traveler and visited 12 states with us (CA, AZ, NM, TX, OR, WA, ID, NV, CO, UT, WY, MT) including his last big road-trip to Arizona just over a month ago. Of course, he absolutely loved just staying home on our ranch where he kept watch over his 60-acre property, helped with the barn animals and greeted guests between daily hikes and swimming in his pond. Like other pet parents, we have sooooo many photos of Cody that it was very difficult to narrow to just a few favorites. We’ve started a fav photos album on https://www.flickr.com/gp/cyndih/5e00bBojx2 to help us remember the many happy memories with our very special boy (the larger photo set is mostly for us but you’re welcome to browse for dog-friendly activity ideas – I’ll be adding location info soon). RIP our dear Cody 8/8/2012 – 8/16/2025 – we miss you so much and were very blessed to have you in our lives.

Marked SAFE from Tiger fire! We've gotten a couple of questions so posting status. This fire started last Friday and was quickly/mostly contained in the first 24-hrs with those evacuated (not us) already returning home https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2025/8/8/tiger-fire -- God bless our fire-fighters and first responders! We only had some orange-level smoke the first night with air quality mostly green/yellow since then so none of our weekend guests impacted (wind usually blows up the mountain like the Caldor fire that spread to Tahoe). Golden serendipity: the past couple of weekends have brought *4* Golden Retrievers to our Ranch 🐕 💗 Of course, these water dogs loved swimming in the ponds, and all 4 also were champs with the barn animals!

One of our guests this weekend has a dock diving Lab who brought back special memories of Hannah, our Lab who LOVED dock diving 🐕 💗 Here are fav photos of her dock diving competitions in 2008/2009 that inspired us to build a dock for her to enjoy at the Ranch. Hannah was obsessed with catching her toy mid-flight and did amazing contortions to adapt when I threw it poorly. At the Ranch, she would do 45 mins of swimming/running biathlons and still be ready for more! We would try to do a couple of warm-up retrieves from the "beach" end of the pond, but she would run back-and-forth between the dock end and the beach end to try to get us to come play her favorite game on the dock. Hannah was a once-in-a-lifetime dog for us and we still miss her a lot. Here's a fav video when we put a GoPro on a doggy vest to view dock diving from her perspective https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UWDFZOy4bM. Extra big hugs to all the dock-diving dogs!

This weekend's returning guest took some really cute pics of her 3 rescued dogs and kindly shared some with us ("lifeguard" bandanas 💕 ). Can you believe she caught the deer chase on video?! Of course, her pups just wanted to play so the deer easily bounded away unharmed. Needless to say, the dogs went home tired from all the swimming and running at the ranch 🐕 + 🦌

Jocko the English bulldog was recently diagnosed with Lymphoma so his pawrents wanted to bring him to our ranch for an extra special day while Jocko was still feeling good enough. He LOVED running off leash on the trails with its many interesting smells and meeting the barn animals. His family said the visit was cathartic and created more cherished memories of their happy dog. We remember all the dogs who visit the Dog & Pony Ranch but the make-a-wish dogs are extra special to us so we'll enjoy these adorable photos of Jocko too.

Jocko is only 5yo so his family is hoping for as many remaining good days as possible with him (just finished chemo) so please send good thoughts and prayers for them. And give your dogs an extra hug since we never have enough days with our precious pets 🐕 💝
