Nothing in a standard home inspection tells you what the sewer line looks like.
A camera does. We run a scope from the house out toward the main and record what is actually in the pipe. Root intrusion, bellies where the line has sagged, separated joints, old clay or cast iron that has given up. None of that shows anywhere else in the inspection.
It matters because a line replacement is one of the few post closing surprises that lands in four and five figures, and it almost always arrives with a yard full of trees that were the clue all along.
Worth adding on any older home, and on any lot with mature hardwoods near the front walk.
