The House passed the Housing for the 21st Century Act 390-9, a rare bipartisan effort aimed at easing regulations and addressing a nationwide shortage of roughly 5 million homes. The bill could make it easier for first-time buyers, streamline zoning and environmental reviews, expand affordable housing funding, and speed up construction with pre-approved designs and relaxed rules for manufactured and higher-density homes.
It also introduces new financing options, oversight of HUD, programs to help veterans, and initiatives to improve financial literacy and eviction protections.
