Florida lawmakers have advanced a proposal that would send a major property tax overhaul to voters this November as a constitutional amendment.

The plan cleared the House by a vote of 75–26 and the Senate 30–9, moving it one step closer to the ballot.

If approved, the proposal would:
🏠Preserve property tax revenue for public schools
🏠Continue funding key local offices like supervisors of elections and clerks of court through property taxes
🏠Gradually increase the homestead exemption from $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027, then to $250,000 in 2028
🏠Require future lawmakers to outline a long-term path toward expanding the exemption to $500,000 or more

To take effect, the amendment would need at least 60% voter approval in November.
