In 1797, Dr. Moses Fisk became one of the first settlers in the area and founded the community of Hilham. He was convinced Hilham sat at the geographical center of the entire globe — and he laid out four roads radiating out from it in the four compass directions, certain that "all roads would lead to his new Rome in the wilderness."
