IMPORTANT REMINDER!
Please ensure that your home has the appropriate number of Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors, and the batteries are replaced every 6 months. Also, never paint a carbon monoxide or smoke detector. If the unit is yellow in color, this means that it is most likely to be more than 10 years old and needs immediate replacement. This color change is purposely designed to be this way to let the consumer know that replacement of the unit is needed. Pretty smart, huh?
Carbon Monoxide is an odorless colorless gas that can creep up on a person without their knowledge and can kill within minutes. Most people get a little drowsy, fall asleep without really knowing and never wake up. Just make sure that you have at least one unit in your common area, and one at each sleeping area of your home. There are some good websites and videos on the placement of these devices.
Again, stay safe and check all of your Smoke and CO detecting units at least every 6 months. Some fire departments have free units, so if you aren’t able to afford these, please check with them and don’t be without.

*****HOME INSPECTIONS*****
As we inspect homes for our agents and clients, we always ensure the safety of a house is our first priority. Our reports will reflect any safety concerns, and we will always recommend the proper steps for corrective actions.
As we enter this cold weather season, people will perhaps begin using festive candles, fireplaces, space heaters and other things that can cause fire and/or emit carbon monoxide (CO) gases. Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless and can quickly begin to starve a human body of oxygen, sometimes causing major sickness and possibly resulting in death.
Whatever you do, please make sure that your home has the proper amount of smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and proper fire extinguishers, especially for the kitchen area. Never store your fire extinguisher near your stove/oven because that is the area in a kitchen most likely to catch fire first, and you will need to be able to get to your extinguisher without a fire in your way.

Helpful tip:
When cleaning a ceiling fan you can avoid the headache of dust, and whatever else is riding around on the blades, from falling on your head, furniture and floors etc. Simply use an old pillow case by slipping it over each fan blade individually and wiping away the particles into the pillow case when sliding it back off. Plus you’ll have the advantage of not sneezing the next several hours of your life.
And yes… We recommend this process while the fan is “not” turned on 😉.

It’s that time of the year when we are beginning to operate our HVAC systems at home. Please remember to check and change your air filter for your furnace, etc. This should be done every 30 to 90 days depending on the type system and the type filter that you use. Never use a filter that is not recommended by your furnace/heating systems manufacturer, as this can inadvertently alter the economical performance of your HVAC system.

MOLD. What are the most favorable conditions for mold to grow and thrive?

Here is a list of the top few, and remember that mold is a pervasive problem , but it can be reduced and even stopped before it becomes a critical issue.

* Moisture
Mold spores need moist or damp areas to grow and reproduce. Watch for flooding, leaky pipes or windows, etc. Also excess moisture in the bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms are prime areas for mold growth.

* Food
Mold spores need food – in the literal sense as well as other materials (i.e. cotton, leather, wood, paper products and others). The most dangerous materials mold loves to grow on, are porous materials (beds, couches etc). Its often impossible to remove mold growth from these items.

* Optimum Temperatures
Mold spores thrive in temperatures from 32 up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures from about 70 – 90 degrees are the most conducive for mold growth. Chances of mold growth are heightened greatly between those temperatures. You may be wondering why mold can grow in your freezer. Mold doesn’t die when temperatures drop below 32 degrees, they lay dormant until temperatures raise, or they are set out to warm up.

*** Favorable Conditions for Mold ***
Below are the prime favorable conditions for mold growth.

A relative Humidity of roughly 50% or higher.
A good preventative measure would be to purchase a hygrometer to measure humidity levels in your home.

Damp or Dusty Conditions
Avoid developing piles of rags, clothing or other mold food sources.

Stagnant air
This explains why overly “tight” homes designed for energy efficiency can have mold problems. Homes need to breathe, and ensuring that you have adequate ventilation is vital to fighting mold; and this may help as well with low amounts of radon gas in a home.

Should you suspect that you have mold in your house, crawl space or basement, feel free to give us a call regarding a sample retrieval and sent overnight to a professional laboratory for testing and final analysis. This can take as little as 24 hours from the time that we take the sample(s). If mold is detected inside your house we will then talk about corrective measures depending on the location and severity of the mold.
Mold can cause a number of physical problems and health experts have also determined that the presence of mold can cause depression in some individuals as well. It is always simple to find mold in a house, and this is why we are trained in mold observation. Photo #1 shows a basement wall that is easily detectable, right? Wrong. There is no certain way to determine if this is mold or maybe some type of mildew. Our lab testing can only say for sure when I find these areas. Photo #2 is another example of a mold suspect under a bathroom cabinet, and can be easily missed by the homeowner. Only a test will determine exactly what this is, and what further steps should, or could, be taken.
