Proper downspout drainage is essential to protect your home’s foundation and prevent erosion. Here are some best practices:
1. Extend Downspouts – Use downspout extensions (at least 4-6 feet) to direct water away from the foundation.
2. Splash Blocks or Trays – Place splash blocks or concrete trays under downspouts to disperse water and reduce soil erosion.
3. Buried Drain Pipes – Connect downspouts to underground drainage pipes that lead to a safe discharge area, such as a dry well or storm drain.
4. Regular Maintenance – Clean gutters and downspouts regularly to prevent clogs and overflow.

We have some low temperatures coming. Make sure all of your waterlines that are exposed to the elements have some heat tape and some pipe insulation to protect them. Having these products installed can prevent pipes from freezing potentially causing an expensive repair if the pipe bursts.

Be safe this holiday season. Icicle safety is important, as icicles can pose serious risks, particularly during winter. Here are key tips to ensure safety around icicles:

1. Recognize the Dangers
• Falling Hazards: Icicles can detach unexpectedly, causing injury or damage to property.
• Structural Risks: Heavy icicles can stress gutters, roofs, and other structures.
• Slippery Surfaces: Melting icicles often drip water that refreezes, creating icy patches below.

2. Prevention and Maintenance
• Clear Gutters: Ensure gutters are clean before winter to prevent ice dams, which lead to icicle formation.
• Roof Insulation: Proper insulation reduces the risk of ice dams by keeping heat from escaping through the roof.
• De-Icing Cables: Consider installing these on roofs to minimize ice buildup.

Galvanized pipes, once widely used for water supply lines, are now considered problematic for several reasons:

1. Corrosion and Rust

• Galvanized pipes are steel pipes coated with a layer of zinc to prevent rusting. Over time, the zinc coating wears away, leaving the steel vulnerable to corrosion. This can lead to rust buildup inside the pipes, restricting water flow and causing blockages.

2. Reduced Water Pressure

• The buildup of rust and mineral deposits narrows the interior diameter of the pipes, significantly reducing water pressure.

3. Contaminants in Drinking Water

• As galvanized pipes corrode, they can release lead and other contaminants into the water supply, posing health risks. This is especially concerning in older homes with aging galvanized plumbing.

4. Leaks and Breakage

• Corroded pipes are prone to leaks and can eventually fail, causing water damage and costly repairs.

5. Limited Lifespan

• The typical lifespan of galvanized pipes is 40–50 years. Many homes still using them have systems well beyond this age, increasing the likelihood of failure.
