INDIANA VETERAN PROPERTY TAX / REFORM ACT OF 2026
Every Indiana veteran or their surviving spouse who is currently benefitting from a tax deduction related to their military service will need to complete a few steps after the passage of the new Indiana Veteran Property Tax Reform Act of 2026. Although this will likely lead to more disabled veterans qualifying for the benefit, there is no grandfather clause – all veterans must refile any applicable exemption before December 30th, 2026 in order to see the benefits on their 2026 – 2027 tax bills.
Here are a few highlights of the new provisions. First, there are no assessment value caps to eliminate the benefit, so the $240,000.00 property value limit has been removed. Second, there can be a 100% exemption for a veteran with a 100% service-connected disability OR if they have an Individual Unemployability rating.
In addition to the total exemption above, there are three additional credits.
First, there is a $250 tax credit for a veteran over the age of 62 with a service-connected disability rating of 10% – 90%.
Second, there is a $350 tax credit for a veteran with a service-connected disability rating of 10% – 90%, and wartime service.
Lastly, these two can be combined to provide a $600 tax credit if the veteran is over the age of 62, with a service-connected disability rating of 10% – 90%, plus wartime service.
All claimants are asked to wait until at least July 1st before attempting to re-file for benefits. Indiana State Form 51186 will be a required form, but is not currently available given that it is being updated to address these changes.
If a veteran needs assistance with completing the form or the filing, they can connect with the local County Veterans Service Office (CVSO), or visit www.in.gov/dva and select “VCSO Locator” and then “Connect to your Local Veteran Service Officer” to submit a request for assistance.
