This vacant stretch of Jersey City could soon become its next major neighborhood.

The first phase of Canal Crossing has officially been approved at 880-900 Garfield Avenue in Bergen-Lafayette, just steps from the Garfield Avenue Light Rail Station.

Developed by Boraie Development, phase one brings a 10-story, 293-unit building — including 59 affordable homes — plus 11,426 square feet of ground-floor retail and a fourth-floor courtyard with a pool, grill stations, and lounge seating.

But that's only the beginning. Six phases are planned in total — eventually adding more housing, retail, the Morris Canal Greenway, and a 33,000-square-foot public park.
