Spring has arrived in Tennessee, and that means it’s time for some breathtaking blooms! 🌸
Native trees are putting on a show, with some already showing off their flowers and others warming up for their debut later this spring. Here are a few you’ll want to keep an eye out for on your next nature walk:
🌳 Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida)
A true Tennessee favorite! Its branches light up with creamy white, soft pink, or bright red bracts (fun fact: those aren’t actually flowers—the real bloom is the tiny yellow-green cluster in the center!).
🌳 Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea)
The Serviceberry is an early bloomer—sometimes even before the leaves show up! Its delicate, snow-white flowers bring a touch of simple elegance.
🌳 Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis)
You can’t miss this one! Its colorful pink-purple flowers line the branches like little bursts of spring sunshine. You can see these flowers as early as late winter or very early spring, often blooming before its leaves appear.
🌳 White Fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus)
The White Fringetree typically blooms in late spring, around May or early June, depending on the region. The wispy white blooms create a “fringe” effect that’s unlike anything else.
🌳 Magnolia (Magnolia macrophylla)
Big, bold, and beautiful! With its massive blossoms, the Magnolia knows how to steal the show.
🌳 Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera)
Tennessee's state tree typically blooms in late spring to early summer, usually around May or June. Its tulip-shaped flowers, with shades of green, yellow, and orange, are a favorite for bees and other pollinators. These blooms add a unique charm to the tree’s towering presence during the warmer months.
Have you seen any of these gorgeous blooms in your neighborhood? Drop your photos in the comments—we’d love to see!
