MOM UPDATE: I’m here to report that sometimes your adult children move away for a few years and then find their dream job back near you. And I’m not sad about it one bit.

If you’ve been around, you’ve likely seen me navigate these early launching years of these 6 boys with a whole lot of tenderness.

As the first 3 have come and gone for college, grad school, semesters abroad, and cross country moves, I’ve wrestled with the ways our family of 8 will never be the same as it once was. New family dynamics, unfamiliar rhythms, and a mom’s heart not quite catching up to the pace of change.

So imagine my joy and surprise when finished his graduate program in mechanical engineering and landed an incredible job, back near home. He’s got his own apartment, serves at church, and has a sweetheart. I can’t believe we get to be apart of his next chapter with such proximity.

So mamas: let them go, send them off, encourage independence, entrust them to God — in spite of your achy heart. And someday, against all odds— they just might want to build their lives in ways that give you opportunity to stay connected in some unexpected way.

And when you don’t expect anything but God’s good plan for His glory and their good…then anything He brings will be more than you could have hoped or imagined.
