Hmmm... πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”

Hmmm... πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”

Across Canada, vacant shopping malls are getting a second life as senior housing. With retail declining and an aging population in need of affordable options, developers have started converting empty commercial spaces into retirement communities.

The concept works because the infrastructure is already there. Malls sit on large, fully serviced lots with road access, utilities, parking, and public transit connections. The wide corridors, open floor plans, and elevator access that once served shoppers translate well to senior living. And the conversion costs up to 60% less per unit than building from scratch.

In Quebec, a 330-unit senior housing community called L'Initial is being built at Galeries Aylmer, replacing a former Canadian Tire anchor store. In Brampton, Ontario, Greenwood Retirement Communities transformed a 50-year-old Holiday Inn into a retirement home, bringing per-unit costs down to $80,000 to $100,000, compared to over $250,000 for new construction.

The projects are part of a broader push to use "infill redevelopment" to address Canada's growing housing shortage for seniors. With thousands of malls sitting partially or fully vacant and the senior population expected to surge in the coming decades, advocates say the math is simple: the empty space already exists, and the people who need it are already waiting πŸ’›

So very glad these homes have been preserved!
