Day 4 of National Surveyors Week is all about the adventures of surveying. This is the main reason why I love my job. If you want to be outside, enjoy the great outdoors and if you like to get a little muddy, wet, bitten by bugs, sweaty, cut up by thorns, this job may be for you:) The good thing for me, is I love all those things!

Day 3 of National Surveyors week is a quick lesson in history in surveying. Did you know that in Wisconsin, the PLSS (Public Land Survey System) was put in place beginning in 1832 and concluding in around 1866. This system is what all legal descriptions for your property are most likely derived from. The system first creates Township lines every 6 miles and then 1 mile x 1 mile sections which are then broken down further into what you now probably call "forties" or 40 +\- acres and then further into smaller lots that are probably what your house is on today. These surveyors back then did this all by long hand math, walking or horseback, used base camps and can only imagine the wildlife , bad weather and hardships they endured along the way. Metal was hard to find or too expensive, so many time they would use found stones, chip them down to a square shape and chisel crosses into them to mark these corners. Sometimes it's good to look back and appreciate what others have done for us in the past to have what we have today.

Thanks for all the effort, fighting bugs, swamps, hot and cold days and dealing w the crazy stuff I throw you into.

National Surveyors week this week! Remember the land you live on, hike on, hunt on......was first established by a surveyor. The roads you drive on, the bridges you cross rivers on, the buildings you work at....we're laid out by a surveyor. Nearly all new construction, engineering and design starts with a surveyor. This profession is commonly overlooked and misunderstood, but can assure you that it is so rewarding and has endless opportunities for any upcoming kids looking for work.

Winner, winner for December photo contest! For this government corner, I had to chip through the ice with my shovel at the computed location, lay down on the ice and reach under to find the corner under the water. Super cool day, super cool photo:)
