Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand how certain conditions can make a home significantly harder to sell. These issues don’t just affect how the property looks – they impact how Buyers feel the moment they walk in. In fact, most buyers for an opinion about a home within the first 7 to 10 seconds of entering – and once that impression is set it’s hard to change.
In many cases, these details can lead to fewer showings, lower offers, and more time on the market.
1.) Musty, or moldy smell.
That damp, lingering odor, usually means moisture issues – possibly mold behind walls, or under flooring
2.) Sticky or filthy floors.
If floors feel grimy or look dull and neglected, it often means cleaning and upkeep aren’t a priority.
3.) Greasy buildup in the kitchen.
Thick grease on cabinets, vents, or appliances signals, long-term neglect – not just surface dirt.
4.) Bathroom, grime and mildew.
Black mildew and grout around tubs or on ceilings point out poor ventilation and lack of regular cleaning.
5.) Stained carpets for pet odors.
Deep stains and strong smells can mean years of buildup – and possibly subfloor damage.
6.) Overflowing – trash or pest.
Visible bugs, droppings or trash issues are a major red flags for ongoing maintenance problems.
7.) Dust layers everywhere.
Heavy dust on baseboards, vents, and fans show the home hasn’t been regularly cleaned.
8.) Clogged drains or slow water flow.
This often indicates buildup and plumbing that’s been ignored overtime.
9.) Peeling paint and water stains.
Signs of leaks or humidity issues that haven’t been addressed.
10.) Neglected exterior.
Overgrown landscaping, dirty entryway and mildew on exterior usually means the inside is the same story.
