Christmas is two months away. Your family is already having the conversation about where to spend the holidays. Consider this a contribution to that conversation. 🎄

Kona at Thanksgiving and Christmas is warm, festive, and completely unlike anywhere else. The Salty Mermaid's 2BR layout sleeps up to six, which means the whole family, or both couples, or the group of friends who've been threatening to do a holiday trip together for years, fits comfortably in a space that has two full bathrooms, a chef's kitchen, a private lanai with a grill, and enough square footage that nobody has to negotiate the morning.

Thanksgiving dinner on a private lanai with the golf course below you and the Pacific somewhere beyond the tree line. Christmas morning with the trade winds and coffee from farms 20 minutes up the hill.

Our property managers can have the kitchen stocked with everything on your holiday shopping list before you arrive, $65/hour, and the holiday cooking starts the moment you walk through the door.

Holiday dates are open. Pick the week that works for your crew.

I’m a lifelong Alaskan, so I know exactly what late November feels like in Anchorage. You drive to work in the dark, you drive home in the dark, and somewhere around Thanksgiving you start pricing flights on your lunch break.

For years, Hawaiʻi was the dream. Then it became a ground-floor condo on the 8th fairway in Keauhou, with a lanai that faces the sunset. I named her The Salty Mermaid, and for eight years I’ve been sharing her with people who needed the same thing I did.

This year she has five open weeks, right through Christmas. If you’ve been staring at the dark too, you know where to find me.

October in Kona after the Ironman is the island's quiet exhale, and it's one of the best times of year to experience it without a specific event driving the trip. 🌺

The crowds have moved on. The island is settling into what we call the in-between season: post-race, pre-holiday, before the whale watchers arrive in December. The weather is perfect, lower humidity than summer, still warm, the trade winds consistent. The ocean is at its clearest.

The coffee farms in the hills are in full harvest mode now, the most fragrant and active time of year. The farmers markets are full of the season's produce. The restaurants on Alii Drive have their tables back.

This is the Kona that people who've been coming for years know about. The version that doesn't require an event or a season as justification, just a good condo, a good local guide, and the willingness to show up when everyone else has gone home.

Fall dates at The Salty Mermaid are open. This is worth doing.

117 reviews. 4.91 stars. Airbnb lists The Salty Mermaid as a Guest Favorite, one of the most loved homes on the platform, and we’ve held Superhost status for eight years running.

The numbers are nice. The words are better. Reviewers mention the location 48 times, the hospitality 45 times, and the quiet 17 times. One summed it up in seven words: “Peaceful and quiet. Felt like we were at home!”

Quiet is hard to find on vacation. It’s built into this one.

Open: November 22 to December 27.

You walked from Hulihe'e Palace south along the seawall, the Pacific on one side and the galleries and restaurants on the other. You stopped into a woodworking gallery where a man was finishing a bowl from koa wood and explained, without being asked, why this particular piece took three months, the grain, the curing, the specific ways koa moves when it's worked wet versus dry.

You bought the bowl. It is the most expensive bowl you have ever owned. You will use it every day for the rest of your life and every time you do you will think about this afternoon.

Lunch was fresh ahi at a waterfront table, the fishing canoes visible in the harbor below, a couple of white-tailed tropicbirds doing circuits above the bay for no reason that seemed to involve anything other than the pleasure of the wind.

The drive back to The Salty Mermaid took 10 minutes. The lanai took the rest of the afternoon. The Pacific turned its colors just after six.

October in Kona is a gift you give yourself for knowing when to show up.

Big news at The Salty Mermaid! 🌊🌺 We installed brand-new, high-tech air conditioning throughout the condo.
That means you’ll enjoy all the Kona sunshine and warm beaches, but when you come “home,” you’ll step into crisp, cool comfort. No noisy window unit. No muggy evenings. Just peace, quiet, and perfect temps, all the time.
Why settle for sweltering resorts or condos without A/C when you could stay somewhere that thought ahead?

Between the turkey and the tinsel, there’s a window.

November 22 to December 20 is open at The Salty Mermaid this year, and most of it falls in one of the quietest stretches on the Hawaiian calendar. The Thanksgiving crowd goes home. The Christmas crowd hasn’t landed. The ocean is still close to 78 degrees.

We’ve broken it into four weeks:
Thanksgiving Week, November 22 to 28
The Quiet Week, November 28 to December 5
Lights on the Bay, December 5 to 12
Christmas Before Christmas, December 12 to 20

Or take the whole window. Some people do.

Alii Drive on a weekday morning in late October is one of the most pleasant walks in the state of Hawaii. The summer crowds are gone. The race week energy has settled. And the road itself, running along the water for three miles through the heart of Kailua-Kona, is doing exactly what it's always done. 🚶‍♀️

The historic Mokuaikaua Church, built in 1820 and the oldest Christian church in Hawaii, anchors the northern end. Across the road, Hulihe'e Palace, the 19th-century summer home of Hawaiian royalty, offers one of the most intimate connections to Hawaiian royal history in the state. The waterfront restaurants along the middle stretch are serving fresh catch that was in the water this morning. The galleries and shops reflect actual local artists and makers rather than the imported souvenir economy.

The seawall at the south end of the drive is where locals come to watch the sunset. On a calm October evening, the fishing canoes returning to the harbor, the light going copper on the water, the trade winds doing their evening thing, it's the kind of scene you describe to people back home and they don't quite believe.

Ten minutes from The Salty Mermaid. Walk it slow.

Long before anyone in Hawaiʻi hung a wreath, the islands had a holiday season of their own.

Makahiki began when the Pleiades, Makaliʻi, rose at sunset, usually in late October or November. For about four months, war was set aside. People honored Lono, god of rain and harvest, with feasting, offerings, contests and rest. The old Makahiki games still turn up at community festivals, including ʻulu maika, a kind of stone bowling.

Keauhou is home to one of the largest ancient hōlua slides in the islands, a lava-rock sled run now recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Chiefs once raced down it on narrow wooden sleds. It’s a short drive from the condo.

A season built around peace and rest. Kona had the right idea first.

Q1-January, February, March. Whale season. Peak Kona. Book it now. 🐋

Winter in Kona means humpback whales offshore from December through April, with the most active period in February and March. It means warm sunny days while the rest of the country is managing its coat situation. It means the Lavaman Triathlon in March, the Kona Marathon season, and the island at its most genuinely local.

The Salty Mermaid is your Gold Coast base for all of it: 1,200 sq ft of newly renovated luxury, central A/C, chef's kitchen, private lanai with a grill, beach gear, a curated local guide, and a $50 spa certificate to the Ho'ola Spa at the Kona Sheraton.

Q1 dates are available now. The whale watching operators fill up months in advance. The best accommodations do too.
