📖 What's the story?

One of the things I wish more people knew about real estate is that closing tables are full of stories you'll never see in the listing photos.

This photo was taken about 30 minutes after people in it, whose lives are now intertwined, met each other for the very first time.

The seller has been living and working in the United States since 2011. But a job relocation is taking him back to Canada where he'll be closer to family and starting a new chapter. As we sat around the closing table, he talked about the things he'll miss about living here and the things he's looking forward to about going home.

The buyers, meanwhile, were soaking up every bit of first-time-homeowner excitement. They're already making plans for that big composite deck out back and talking about all the ways they'll use it once they move in.

What struck me as we sat around the table was that nobody was sad to be there.

Everyone was exactly where they wanted to be.

One person was getting the opportunity to return home. Two others were getting the opportunity to create one.

And for about an hour, all of those stories intersected around one conference table.

Put yourself in the way of joy. 

Cheryl Strayed's mom said something like that about beauty- that all we need to (and can) do is put ourselves in the path of it. 

I think about joy the same way. Joy - that real feeling of lift and peace that blooms inside of us sometimes and that we all long for - can't be conjured on demand, I've found. As Kate Bowler describes, it can be hard to be joyful anyway when we've discovered that life is far more complicated than we were promised. 

But I think we can put ourselves in the way of it. By that I mean, I think we can create the conditions that at least leave space for joy. We can't force the feeling to come. But we can insist upon carving out little bits of space in our lives so that it might just show up sometimes. 

Do I have time to sail? I absolutely do not. The emails need answering and the grocery shopping needs to get done and someone needs to reschedule the kids' doctor's appointments and for the love of god where did all this laundry come from? I don't have time to sail. But if I don't insist upon carving out space for joy to appear, I will spend every waking moment from now until eternity answering emails and folding laundry and panicking about all the things undone. 

So I've decided that I must insist upon making this space in my days, even if it is infrequent, even if it is sometimes hard won and must be fiercely protected.

🕵️‍♀️ Name That Spot!

Let's see who knows this one of my local favorites...

A few clues:

🐶 This place's name is a nod to both a four-legged friend and the building's former life.

🏦 Speaking of that former life... people used to come here to make deposits. These days, they're more likely to come for steak, seafood, and a cocktail.

🍽️ It's part of a little restaurant family with sister spots in Mattawan and Saugatuck — similar names, but not quite the same.

🍦 This one is located in a small town that's pretty well known for its ice cream.
