Pugh, President and CEO of Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), to our Kalamazoo office, joined by Jackie Koney, Executive Director, and Sonja Dean, Deputy Director, of LISC Kalamazoo. It's National Black Business Month, and we wanted to do more than just celebrate — we wanted to name what's actually happening in our industry.

A 2023 study by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City and Grove Impact found that Black and Hispanic developers make up less than 1% of private real estate developers in the entire country. Less than 1% — while making up nearly 40% of the population.

That gap isn't just about who's building. It's about who has access to capital in the first place. Research from the Knight Foundation found real estate is one of the toughest industries in the country for minority-owned firms to break into and grow in.

Founder Jamauri Bogan said it best:

"One of the things we really want to highlight this month is the availability of minority developers — and honestly, the capital that flows into that ecosystem. There's still a lot of work to be done there. But as someone who stands in this space, I'm excited about the progress that's being made."

That's what this month is about for us — not just recognition, but the real work of changing those numbers. Proud to be part of that, right here in Kalamazoo.

August is National Black Business Month, and it's a good time to say plainly what we're about: we're a minority-led development firm, building in the neighborhoods that built us.

We closed on the land for Zone 32 Phase 2!

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the continued pursuit of opportunity for all.

Freedom has come at a tremendous cost — paid through the sacrifices, courage, and perseverance of those who fought for justice and equality.

As we reflect on their legacy, we're reminded that freedom is most meaningful when it's accompanied by access to housing, education, economic opportunity, and strong communities.

Today we celebrate. We honor. And we recommit to building communities where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

Zone 32 Phase II is in the news — and we couldn't be more proud.

MLive is covering the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners' approval of $2 million in Housing Millage funds for our 38-unit affordable housing development in Kalamazoo's Northside Neighborhood. Groundbreaking is planned for this summer.
