How to AVOID/MINIMIZE paying CAPITAL GAINS TAX to Uncle Sam on your home sale:
-Live in it for 2 of the last 5 years you've owned it and exclude $250k (500k if married) of its appreciation profit from taxation!
-You may qualify for a taxation exception if you had to sell because of work, health, another unforseeable event. (Check IRS publication 523 for more details)
-KEEP RECORDS/RECEIPTS of home improvements! Those costs will be factored into your "cost basis" of your home, resulting in a lower "net profit," decreasing your taxes (always a good thing).
