45 years. One vision: A Kansas City that is home for everyone.

Story 21 of 45: "If it weren't for reStart, my son would not have made it." This mother's story is a reminder that homelessness doesn't discriminate.

Homelessness affects people who are deeply loved. People with parents who never stopped answering the phone. People with families who never stopped hoping. People whose lives changed because of circumstances that spiraled beyond anyone's control.

Her son is a veteran. He returned home from Iraq, struggled with chronic pain after back surgery, lost his job, and began self-medicating.

Ten years later, she still credits reStart with helping save her son's life.

Stable housing creates the space for healing, recovery, and a second chance. And sometimes, it helps a family find their way back to one another.

Volunteer Spotlight | Lockton Human Resources Team💙

A huge thank you to the Lockton HR Volunteer Group for being part of a very special milestone at reStart: helping move our very first families into Family Lodge!

The team went above and beyond at both of our locations. At Central Lodge, they painted the lobby, helped move our first families into their new spaces at Family Lodge, and cleaned the suites after families moved out.

At Family Lodge, they helped build welcome baskets, set up rooms, and clean and prepare suites for families arriving at their new home.

Being the volunteers who helped welcome our very first families into Family Lodge makes their contribution especially meaningful. Every box moved, room cleaned, basket built, and detail completed helped make that first move-in day possible.

Thank you, Lockton HR, for showing up for this milestone and helping us welcome families home. We’re so grateful to have had you alongside us for the beginning of this exciting new chapter!

A huge thank you to the team at Springline Advisory for spending time at reStart’s Family Lodge!

Their team jumped in to help move and arrange furniture, clean rooms, and freshen up couches throughout the Lodge. These behind-the-scenes projects make a big difference in creating a clean, comfortable, and welcoming space for families as they settle in.

We’re so grateful for volunteers who are willing to roll up their sleeves and help us make Family Lodge feel like home. Thank you, Springline Advisory, for being part of it!

A huge thank you to United Way of Greater Kansas City for helping our students head back to school feeling prepared, confident, and ready to learn!

Through their partnership with FNBO, 130 backpacks filled with school supplies were donated to reStart students. These backpacks are more than just school supplies. They represent opportunity, confidence, and a community that believes in the potential of every child.

We are so grateful to United Way and FNBO for making sure the children and youth we serve have the tools they need to start the school year strong. Thank you for investing in our students and helping them thrive!

Story 20 of our 45 Stories for 45 Years: Cecilia G.

Cecilia spent two years doing everything she could to stay housed. She was working, paying for a motel she could afford, and fighting to keep a roof over her head. When the health department closed the motel, she suddenly had nowhere to go.

After spending time at a warming shelter, Cecilia was connected with reStart. Here, she found more than a safe place to stay. She found access to resources, support, and the dignity of having her basic needs met while she worked toward a more stable future.

But what makes Cecilia’s story especially powerful is what she chose to do with her experience.

Rather than letting homelessness define her, Cecilia wants to use her voice to help others. She is learning about resources throughout Kansas City, connecting with organizations, and preparing to share her story with the hope of creating change for others facing homelessness.

“I want to figure out a way to make it work for all these other individuals too.”

Cecilia’s story is a reminder that homelessness is rarely as simple as it looks from the outside. Behind every story is a person, a set of circumstances, and a future that is still being written.
