Ronchamp - France
The Notre Dame du Haut, also known as Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut de Ronchamp, is a chapel and also one of the most important examples of 20th century religious architecture,
located in the commune of Ronchamp, in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in the eastern part of the French Republic.
1. Designed by the Franco-Swiss architect Le Corbusier in 1953 when the groundbreaking began, the chapel was finished and consecrated in 1955, making it one of the most important religious places where 80,000 visitors are visiting it each year.
2. Today what we can see on the hill of Bourlémont is a modern and simple designed chapel with two entrances, one main altar and three chapels beneath towers.
Even though it appears to be small, the whole structure is much more complex and also powerful.
The main part of the structure consists of two concrete membranes that are separated with a soace that is some 2 meters (7 feet) wide, forming a shell that constitutes the roof of the building.
3. The roof itself is upturned and supported on columns embedded within the walls, and the interior space that is between the walls and roof is filled with clerestory windows.
4. The walls which have no structure that was built against them, otherwise known as buttress, are constructed so good that they offer great stability to this rough masonry.
5. The exterior of the chapel is colored in white, whereas the interior is also colored white, however, the ceiling is gray and left as when it was finished, the flooring is interestingly constructed of cement and stone to give the impression as it is a chapel from the past,
filled with colors from the colored glass that was placed on some of the windows. Still, the pièce de résistance of the whole religious structure is the South Wall, which is a story for itself.
7. Le Corbusier has spent plenty of time to design the interesting form of this wall, where as it moves from east to west, it curves towards the south, and to be even more unorthodox, there are different size windows that are scattered in an irregular pattern across the wall, with openings that slant towards their centers at varying degrees, thus letting in light at different angles.

Elrod House - Palm Springs, CA - 1968
John Lautner's Modernist Masterpiece
The Elrod House was designed by John Lautner in 1968. The home was commissioned by fellow designer, Arthur Elrod, and is considered the best example of Lautner’s “organic architecture” style that he developed while working as an apprentice under Frank Lloyd Wright.
In his design, Lautner embraces the natural shapes and elements of the surrounding Palm Springs landscape.
The natural rock of the San Jacinto mountains is featured prominently indoors as the boulders are nestled comfortably between concrete and glass.
The most notable characteristic of the Elrod House is its large circular living room with curved retractable windows that open to a terrace and swimming pool overlooking the desert city sprawl.
In 1971 the Elrod House was featured in the James Bond film, Diamonds are Forever, which further cemented the home as one of Lautner's most recognizable designs.

Home is constructed from 17th & 18th century materials imported from France!

A rare French country estate defined by authenticity, craftsmanship, and permanence. Designed in collaboration with AOME Architects, this stately home was constructed using 200 to 300-year-old reclaimed materials sourced village by village across France, including antique limestone, historic French oak beams, clay roof tiles, and stone flooring gathered from regions spanning southern France, Burgundy, and Champagne. To honor the integrity of these materials, a French crew of masons and plasterers was brought onsite to install everything using traditional Old World methods. The exterior reflects true heirloom-quality construction, featuring two-foot-thick limestone walls, hand-applied lime plaster finished with beeswax, copper flashings throughout, and half-round copper gutters mounted to reclaimed antique fascia boards. Limestone terraces extend the architecture outdoors with timeless grace. Inside, generous volumes and refined proportions reveal reclaimed stone floors, antique oak elements, and radiant heating beneath solid materials. Modern systems for comfort, efficiency, and security are seamlessly integrated without compromising the home’s historic character. This home was designed so future generations would never need to alter it - crafted as a lasting architectural heirloom and a once-in-a-generation offering of enduring beauty, provenance and legacy quality.

Frank Lloyd Wright - “My Little Gem”
The Smith House in Michigan - 1950
National Register of Historic Places
The Melvyn Maxwell Smith and Sara Stein Smith House, also known as MyHaven, is a Usonian home that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and constructed in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in 1949 and 1950.
School teachers Sara Stein Smith and Melvyn Maxwell Smith, undeterred by their modest salaries and guided by a shared love of architecture, met Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin in 1941 and commissioned a custom home.
The Smith House in Bloomfield Hills is an excellent example of Wright’s Usonian ideal which aimed to build quality houses for the American middle class. The lovingly restored home, which Wright called “My Little Gem” during a 1951 visit, features an L-shaped floor plan and horizontal, cantilevered roof planes.
According to the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office, "the house is "a prime example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian design philosophy for housing the 'common' man."
The National Register of Historic Places described the home's characteristics as including "ingenious building techniques, free flowing interior spaces exploding to the outdoors, as well as an 'organic' relationship to the site"

Lautner’s Castle is a midcentury Los Angeles gem refreshed for the 21st century
Conner + Perry Architects restore Lautner’s Castle, a modernist house by the 20th-century master, dating from the early 1980s – take a look around
American architect John Lautner designed over 200 architecture projects during his career, which began in the 1930s with an apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright. He then started his own firm in Los Angeles in 1938.

Most of John Lautner's work was realised in California, including the development of his famous Googie-style coffee shops in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Garcia House, and perhaps, his most famous home, the Sheats-Goldstein Residence in the hills of Los Angeles. It is also in LA that local firm Conner + Perry Architects was recently tasked to restore and remodel one of the late architect’s masterpieces from the early 1980s, ‘Lautner's Castle’.
