Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas is proposing up to $235 million in public financing to support an expansion of CPKC Stadium as part of the KC Current’s broader $1.4 billion riverfront development plan.

The proposal would help fund a larger stadium, a new parking garage, additional mixed-use development, and infrastructure improvements, with stadium capacity potentially increasing to 18,000 seats.

The city would negotiate a financing package backed by future tax revenue generated within the district while also pursuing state funding. The plan comes as the first phase of the Current’s riverfront district nears completion, but it also faces scrutiny amid ongoing debates over public incentives for sports venues following recent stadium funding discussions involving the Royals.

The ordinance is scheduled to be considered by the Kansas City City Council today.

A new nightlife venue is set to debut in Kansas City's West Bottoms as Club Casablanca opens on June 12.

The club aims to bring an international-style dance experience to the city, featuring what it says is North America's largest LED disco ball, a projection-mapped visual wall, a two-story open-air patio, premium VIP areas, and a high-end sound system.

Designed to blend indoor and outdoor social spaces, the venue is positioning itself as a destination for both locals and visitors during the FIFA World Cup period and beyond.

Club Casablanca will launch with a summer lineup of DJs from the United States, Argentina, Ecuador, Portugal, and the Netherlands, bringing a globally inspired music program to Kansas City's growing entertainment scene.

The Kansas City Current closed May with a 1-0 victory over Boston Legacy FC at CPKC Stadium, powered by a second-half goal from Temwa Chawinga.

The win was historic, as the Current extended their home unbeaten streak to 23 consecutive regular-season matches, the longest home unbeaten run in NWSL history, while also stretching their league-record home winning streak to 10 games.

Chawinga's 69th-minute goal, her seventh of the season, was enough for Kansas City to secure its third shutout of 2026 and remain perfect at home with a 6-0-0 record.

The Current improved to 7-5-0 and head into the summer break with momentum while sitting fourth in the league standings.

Kansas City's Crossroads Arts District will host the Crossroads Night Market across five consecutive weekends from June 12 through July 12, creating a neighborhood-wide celebration timed with the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Inspired by the district's popular First Fridays events, the free market will feature more than 200 artists, local restaurants, retailers, arts organizations, live music, street performances, culinary pop-ups, gallery events, and cultural programming.

Stretching along multiple locations near 18th Street and just north of the National WWI Museum and Memorial's FIFA Fan Festival site, the event is designed to give visitors and residents an authentic Kansas City experience while supporting local artists, entrepreneurs, and small businesses.

Organizers encourage attendees to explore the walkable district and use the free KC Streetcar, which provides convenient access throughout the Crossroads.

🏠 KC VOTERS MAY SOON DECIDE ON A $100 MILLION AFFORDABLE HOUSING BOND

Kansas City City Council has approved an August ballot measure that would ask voters to fund $100 million for affordable housing projects across the city.

If approved, the money would go toward new housing, rehabilitation projects, and blight removal. The proposal comes as the Kansas City metro faces a shortage of nearly 64,000 affordable housing units.

The housing bond is part of a larger $1.7 billion package that also includes infrastructure, economic development, and convention facility improvements.

What are your thoughts on this proposal?

After nearly four decades as a signature community event, Downtown Days in Lee’s Summit will come to an end following its 2026 festival.

Organizers announced the decision after ongoing concerns about safety and security, particularly following multiple incidents during this year’s event that included fights, assaults, property damage, large groups refusing to disperse, and a bear spray incident that led to a woman being hospitalized.

Despite efforts to increase security measures in recent years, organizers said they could no longer ensure the level of safety needed for attendees, volunteers, businesses, and partners.

While Downtown Days will be retired, Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street says it remains committed to bringing the community together through new events and initiatives in the future.
