Shelter KC: A Kansas City Rescue Mission Shelter KC is a Kansas City Rescue Mission helping Kansas City’s homeless men and women experience freedom from the past and hope for the future.

We believe the love of Jesus Christ changes lives. We've seen it happen here every day since 1950. Founded in 1950, Kansas City Rescue Mission offers relief, recovery and reentry services to homeless individuals surviving on Kansas City’s streets. Each service we provide is developed to offer a step up from the misery of homelessness along with the knowledge that there is hope in each new day! Kansas City Rescue Mission offers its services at no charge (with very rare exceptions) to homeless individuals. Its services and programs are available to any individual, 18 or older, regardless of race, religion, gender, lifestyle or creed.

The face behind the feed and the person keeping you in the loop on all things Shelter KC? That’s me, Andi!

I’ve been the Community Engagement Coordinator at Shelter KC for two years, and I’m heading into my third holiday season with the team!

From managing our social media and website to coordinating volunteers, I love using my creativity and skills to connect our community with all the amazing things happening here.

But my favorite part of my job goes beyond the computer... I love learning our clients’ names, hearing their stories, and watching them transform their lives. Being able to witness those changes and play even a small part in someone’s journey is what makes this work so meaningful to me.

Outside of Shelter KC, you can find me trying new restaurants, crafting on my couch (diamond painting is my current favorite!), or soaking up the sunshine on my patio with my golden retriever, Basil.

I’m grateful to be part of a team that brings hope and lasting change to Kansas City, and I love getting to share the stories that make this mission so special.

Who says a birthday celebration can’t make a difference, too?

Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw and her family celebrated a special birthday with us by putting together crisis care kits for our upcoming Christmas at the Crossroads event this December!

We LOVE seeing families turn special moments into meaningful ways to serve our community! Thank you, Ryana and family, for helping us make this Christmas season a little brighter for the men and women we serve!

The call came while he was in prison. She was done.

He answered it the way he answered everything back then, with anger. Today they talk, they raise their kids together, and he will tell you plainly it is amazing what God can do.

You are a lot smarter than you give yourself credit for.

That is what our Women's Center staff tell the women who arrive here. Surviving that long takes real skill, and the work is learning to use it to build a life instead of surviving one. The small victories nobody outside sees: a little more pride in her appearance, reconnecting with family she had let down, and in some cases paying off $4,000 of debt while in the program so she can walk out and get her own place with nothing hanging over her head.

A little kindness goes a long way!

A big thank you to the ladies from Blue Springs Church of the Nazarene for spending time with our ladies at Shelter KC and blessing each of them with a purse filled with thoughtful goodies. From jewelry and lotion to everyday essentials, each gift was a sweet reminder that someone cares.

We’re so grateful for this wonderful time of fellowship and for a community that continues to show love in such meaningful ways!

Downtown Kansas City. Cubbies, park benches, bus stops. Sunup to sundown, drunk.

One of the women in our program describes what homelessness looked like for her. She knew where to get free food and where to take a shower, and she knew that was not where she was supposed to be. That knowing is where hope starts.

What do people actually do all day at a homeless shelter?

Overnight guests check in at night and leave in the morning, which keeps folks alive in dangerous heat and cold. During the day it is job searching, legal and financial appointments, and health stabilization programs. The men on our long-term recovery program are in classes, work therapy, support groups, Bible studies, and one-on-one time with a recovery coach.
