As a real estate professional and a "Black Man", for the lack of a better term... I pride myself on doing my part to combat the blatant, systematic, and evil racist policies that my industry historically and currently still practice.
We just recently held an event, Redlined — A Diversity, Equity & Inclusion REALTOR® Reception, at the Johnson County Museum that highlighted many of the graphic details of these discriminatory tactics done here locally, so that more Realtors can understand and be advocates. A few FACTS of interest below. Knowledge is power! Be The change!
●FACT: Redlining is defined as a discriminatory practice that consists of the systematic denial of services such as mortgages, insurance loans, and other financial services to residents of certain areas, based on their race or ethnicity.
●FACT: This means that the private industry AND the federal government chose to fund and support home purchases for white families and neighborhoods over African American families and other communities of color.
●FACT: Redlining and other discriminatory practices such as blockbusting, racially restrictive covenants, gentrification and steering have clearly robbed Black families of BILLONS in generational wealth.
●FACT: NEARLY EVERY J.C. NICHOLS DEVELOPMENT PRIOR TO 1950 CONTAINED THIS LANGUAGE IN THE PROPERTY DEED OR
THE DECLARATION OF RESTRICTIONS: "NONE OF THE SAID LAND MAY BE CONVEYED TO, USED,
OWNED, OR OCCUPIED BY NEGROES AS OWNERS OR TENANTS"
●FACT: Racial restrictive covenants, while not legally enforceable, are still on the books locally and across the country!
*The exhibit will be up until January 7 for those interested. http://www.jcprd.com/Redlined
