Kansas City Council officially approved the Vacant Land Activation Initiative on May 15, launching a coordinated effort to turn the city’s more than 17,000 vacant and underutilized properties into community assets.

The resolution lays the groundwork for a short-term task force to develop policy recommendations addressing blight, safety concerns, housing needs, and redevelopment barriers.

While it doesn’t include funding or immediate development plans, the initiative aims to align city departments, leverage public input, and create a roadmap for transforming abandoned lots, buildings, and land bank properties into productive spaces that benefit neighborhoods across the city.

Redfin has released its list of the 10 Hottest Neighborhoods of 2025, Prairie Village and Mission Hills (ZIP code 66208) came in at #8—making them one of only five Midwestern neighborhoods to crack the national top 10. While home sales in the area were down 19% year-over-year, online listing views spiked 132%, and nearly half of homes sold above asking price. According to Redfin, the most competitive homes are the more affordable ones, with fierce demand for anything under $500,000. The list ranks ZIP codes in the 150 most populous U.S. metro areas using Redfin’s Compete Score and year-over-year growth in listing views. To qualify, a neighborhood had to see at least 50 home sales from Jan 1–Feb 28 and score above 50 on Redfin’s competitiveness scale.

Redfin’s Top 10 Hottest Neighborhoods of 2025:
1. Prospect Heights & Clinton Hill, NY
2. Jenison, MI
3. Campton Hills & St. Charles, IL
4. Fairport, NY
5. Polk Gulch & Russian Hill, CA
6. Great Kills, NY
7. Franklin, WI
8. Prairie Village & Mission Hills, KS
9. Lakeville, MN
10. Bowie, MD

Zillow has unveiled its list of the hottest U.S. real estate markets for 2025, ranking the top 50 metro areas based on factors like home value growth, job creation relative to new construction, projected increases in owner-occupied households, and how quickly homes are selling.

Despite ongoing challenges with affordability and volatile mortgage rates, fierce competition is driving strong demand in key markets. In some areas, homes are selling in as little as a week — nearly three weeks faster than the national average as of late 2024. Zillow expects prices in these markets to keep climbing, though at a more moderate pace compared to last year, offering a slightly more stable environment for first-time buyers.

Buffalo, New York, claims the top spot for the second year in a row. Home values there grew 5.8% in 2024, and while growth is expected to slow to 2.8% in 2025, demand remains intense. The typical Buffalo home is forecast to cost around $267,878 this year, with properties moving from listing to pending in just 12 days — a clear sign of how competitive the market has become.
