π¨ Happy 2026 Plaza Art Fair! πΌοΈ
Here's a picture of the very first Plaza Art Fair held in 1932. π·
Did you know, you can find the history of not just the Fair but all of Country Club Plaza on the walls of 46 Penn?
The history is told through art galleries. This particular gallery features historic photographs and a plaque that reads...
"Country Club Plaza is considered to be the nation's first suburban shopping center. Back in the early 1900's, many doubted its location five miles south of downtown Kansas City, but the area has been consistently successful since its first buildings opened in 1923. With its high-end retail shops, restaurants and entertainment venues, The Plaza is a destination for Kansas City residents and visitors alike.
During the Depression when many businesses around the country were failing, The Plaza looked for new ways to attract customers to the area. As a promotion to attract shoppers and lift their spirits, the Plaza Art Fair held its inauguration in 1932. Located on an empty lot at the corner of Nichols Road and Central, the first Fair hosted 90 artists who displayed paintings by leaning them against trees and benches. Prices ranged from one to ten dollars. Now the Plaza Art Fair has been going strong for over 80 years, ranging over nine city blocks and attracting over 250,000 visitors annually. The Fair features 240 nationally known artists and has become a top-ranked, nationally recognized art event."
We love being able to share the Fair's history. It's one of Kansas Cityβs premier annual events, and it's happening just a few steps from our front door.
Enjoy this year's fantastic art, music, food, and drinks. πΌοΈ πΆπ π·
