Here is a real estate transaction question that most new home buyers ask:

I'm buying a house. Should I have it tested for radon?
The EPA recommends that all houses, regardless of what radon zone the house is located in, be tested for radon during point of sale. The most common procedure for radon testing during real estate transactions is for the potential buyer to request the radon test as part of the overall home inspection. The radon test is generally a separate service and must be requested. If the radon test is 4 pCi/L or greater, the EPA recommends the potential buyer negotiate with the seller to have a radon mitigation system installed with the stated goal of bringing the radon level in the home below 4 pCi/L.

WHAT IS RADON?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. Radon is radiation. There are no safe levels of radiation, so the higher the radon level around you, the greater your risk. Health experts recommend that you try to minimize your exposure to all forms of radiation including x-rays, nuclear radiation and solar radiation, but especially radon because of its ability to mutate cells within the human body by prolonged exposure.

What is Radon?

Radon is a gas. It is created by the natural breakdown of uranium that is present in soil, rock, and water in the ground. As this breakdown occurs a single atom gas is formed which is radioactive and can easily make its way into the air we breathe and into the fresh water we drink. When we breath in these particles they cause damage to lung tissue. With enough exposure the chance of lung cancer increases.
