The Memorial Day Parade! Just after we moved here, I got to experience my first Kensington Memorial Day Parade. It is so festive. Everyone comes out to set up chairs and Marlborough Drive to watch. Oh to be a kid growing up in Kensington....

I love how many historic homes there are in Kensington, and all along the Adams Avenue corridor. Historic designations are a great way to preserve neighborhoods characteristics. An additional benefit to historic designation is the ability to apply for the Mills act, which gives qualifying homeowners a reduction in their annual property taxes. Reason #2: The Little Free Libraries. I love books. I am an avid reader and a shameless book collector. When we moved here I must have had a couple dozen boxes of books. I’ve wanted to make one of these libraries for a long time. I was thrilled to find several of these little libraries on my daily walks. If you don’t know about them, I put a link at the bottom of this post. The premise is “Take a Book; Leave a Book”. It’s a great way to recycle your finished books and possibly find a book you’ve never heard of before. There is even a children’s library in the neighborhood. (I will say that some are short on serious reading material, and long on romance novels but hey, there’s something for everyone!) I love that Kensington is inhabited by folks that like to enrich themselves by reading and are also sharing the wealth. Reason #1: The Kensington sign. When I exit the freeway and head east on Adams Ave. I know that I am home when I see the Kensington sign. I live these signs. They are like the welcome mat for a downtown neighborhood. Our sign lights up at night and along with the lights of the restaurants and bars, it lets passers by know that “This is where the fun is!” There are signs over many neighborhoods around the county, but I like mine the best!
