Get to Know Your Customers Day reminds businesses to reach out to patrons and get to know them better. The day is observed annually on the third Thursday of each quarter (January, April, July, October).

When businesses get to know their customers, they also get to know more about what they need to grow. Remember when Main Street businesses were locally owned and operated? The owners knew you by name and knew your shopping habits. Additionally, they typically knew what you wanted to buy. Not surprisingly, they were willing to get it in for you if they didn't have it.

Unfortunately, with the advent of the Internet and big-box stores, much of the personal attention has gone by the wayside. Get to Know Your Customers Day is a day to turn that around. Make it a point to get to know a little more about your customers. Most importantly, make each of them feel like they are your most important customer of the day.

National Pet Fire Safety Day on July 15th reminds us to consider our pets when planning fire routes and safety in our homes.

Our pets are as much a part of our family as any other member. This day stresses the importance of protecting them. Taking preventable measures now can both save your home and your pet. Many times our pets can cause a fire if we don't take the proper precautions.

FUN FACT:
Dalmatians became the official firehouse dogs in the 1700s because they had a natural, calming affinity for horses. They would run alongside the horse-drawn fire carriages to keep the horses calm and protect the equipment while firefighters fought the blazes.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, pets are responsible for starting roughly 1,000 home fires in the U.S. each year. The top offender? Accidental stove k**b turn-ons by curious dogs looking for leftovers!

A cat’s whiskers are incredibly sensitive radar detectors. In smoky conditions, a cat uses its whiskers to detect changes in airflow currents, which can help them navigate away from a fire and find small escape routes or fresh air pockets near the floor.

Many modern fire departments now carry specialized pet oxygen masks on their trucks. Unlike human masks, these are cone-shaped to snugly fit everything from a tiny kitten to a large retriever, saving thousands of animals lives every year.

Have you herd? Things go udderly awry in the middle of July each year during Cow Appreciation Day. People dress like bovines for free food. It's a moo-ving experience to witness, designed to save the lives of cows everywhere for just one day. How? By eating chicken instead, that's how.

Across the country, for one day only, adults and children alike herd into their local Chick-fil-A for their favorite cow meal. And it's not hay.

Spotted cows of black and white hoof it across town. Between baseball and soccer, they steer themselves toward the nearest grazing. If it feels like deja-moo, perhaps you've joined in the stampede a time or two.

They arrive in cars, trucks, and even cow-a-sakies. Even though the crowds grow and grow, there's never any need to beef up security. While some of us may be outstanding in our fields, we should get a mooove on before it's pasture time to get free food.

Even the dairies across the country have joined the herd. They remind everyone of the good products cows and producers bring our way. It's a positive way of milking a celebration and utilizing both sides of the hide.

Barbershop music has deep roots in African American culture, tracing back to traditional, improvisational music from the 1800s. Early folk songs and hymns sung in four parts eventually evolved into the distinct, blending four-part harmony we know today.

While many associate the style with a four-person quartet, entire massive choirs also perform barbershop music. It is an inclusive genre that brings together people of all ages and backgrounds, featuring uplifting, spiritual, or lighthearted songs with clear lyrics and easily singable melodies.

National Barbershop Music Day specifically honors the founding of Sweet Adelines International on July 13, 1945. Established by Edna Mae Anderson in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the organization was created to bring women together in harmony. Today, it boasts nearly 21,000 members worldwide who rehearse, compete, and perform locally.
