The Peanut Butter & Jelly Debate
My wife and I have an ongoing debate.
What tastes better?
A peanut butter and jelly sandwich you make yourself, or one that's made for you?
If you make it yourself, you control everything. Crunchy or creamy peanut butter. Grape or strawberry jelly. Thick bread. Thin bread. You get the ratios exactly the way you like them.
But...
There's something about a PB&J that someone else made for you.
Maybe it's nostalgia. Maybe it reminds you of elementary school when Mom or Dad packed your lunch. Whatever it is, sometimes it's just nice knowing someone else took care of it.
I've been thinking about that a lot lately.
I'm about three and a half weeks away from turning over one of my own rental properties, and even as someone who does this every day, it's a lot.
I'm coordinating painters, landscapers, pool service, the hot tub, punch-list items, and all the little maintenance projects that seem to reveal themselves one after another. My last tenants were great, but every long-term tenancy leaves behind normal wear and tear that has to be addressed before the next family moves in.
And here's the funny part.
Every time I cross one thing off the list, I find two more.
Fortunately, I have a huge advantage.
I already know who to call.
I have trusted vendors, an incredible team, and our sister company, North Bay Home Heroes, helping me knock out projects. Even then, coordinating everything while running a business, living in the house, raising kids, and trying to enjoy summer takes real time and effort.
It made me think about independent landlords.
Most don't have a trusted vendor list sitting in their phone.
They're searching online, hoping someone calls them back, comparing bids, and wondering if they're hiring the right person.
That can be exhausting.
Sometimes doing it yourself makes perfect sense.
Other times, it's worth letting someone else make the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Not because you can't do it.
Because your time is valuable.
Because your weekends are valuable.
And because sometimes it's nice to know someone else has it handled.
Whether that's a property manager or a company like North Bay Home Heroes helping with a turnover, the goal is the same.
Get the work done right, get the property back on the market quickly, and get back to enjoying your investment.
As someone who's in the middle of his own turnover right now...
I get it.
Have a great week, everybody.
