North Carolina has its own way of saying “no”… but you might not realize it until about three conversations later.

“Bless your heart” isn’t comfort—it’s a gentle way of saying whatever you just said ain’t landing the way you thought it did. “I might could” sounds promising, but it’s really just a polite maybe that already knows it’s not happening.

“I’ll have to see” means the decision has been made… and it’s not in your favor. And “I’ll get to it” lives somewhere between intention and a timeline that does not exist.

Even “y’all come back now” doesn’t always mean soon—it just means you’re leaving on good terms.
