I don't get political, ever. But I'm putting my own money behind this as a Realtor here in Winston-Salem to have a frank conversation about data centers.
As a Realtor, I spend every day helping people make one of the biggest decisions of their lives... where to plant roots, raise their kids, and build their future. And I can tell you this with certainty:
People don’t move to Winston-Salem for industrial-scale development. They move here for space, for community, for peace, and for the kind of lifestyle that’s getting harder and harder to find.
I understand the argument on the other side. Growth matters. Revenue matters. Jobs matter. And yes, permanent jobs and construction work will help some families... and prompt growth (how much growth is debatable)...
But we have to ask an honest question:
At what cost?
Because once something like this is built, there’s no going back. The land is changed. The expectations are changed. And for some of our neighbors, their lives are changed whether they like it or not.
This isn’t just about being “for” or “against” development. It’s about being thoughtful stewards of our community. It’s about making sure the people who already live here aren’t treated as obstacles to be worked around.
Winston-Salem is worth protecting; not just its tax base, but its identity... That comes through loud and clear with buyers and sellers I talk to every day.
If you're as concerned as I am, please keep showing up to City Council meetings. I know I will be. It's uncomfortable for me too, but your voice is worth it.
