Chickens run this island - and they’re high up in the pecking order. But how did Key West become so famous for its free-roaming roosters? 🐔

It started in the 1820s, when early settlers brought chickens to the island and sold them to residents. Over time, many were left to roam freely, and with no natural predators, their population steadily grew.

In 1986, Florida banned cockfighting, leading to the release of even more roosters. Then Hurricane Georges helped scatter them across the island, accelerating their spread.

Fast forward to today, and Key West’s chickens are as iconic as the conch shell and the Mile 0 sign - an unmistakable part of island life.

So if you see one strolling by, consider it a warm welcome from the locals! 🐓

A Coastal Flood Statement is in effect for all the Florida Keys.

Tides are running almost a foot above predicted, resulting in: minor saltwater flooding of low elevation streets & lots, some storm drains overflowing, and some seawalls/docks being overtopped around the time of higher high tide. Boaters should also expect less clearance under fixed bridges with these higher tides.
