The City of Key West invites the community to join in celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 20th from noon until 4 p.m. at Nelson English Park at 300 Catherine Street.
The family-oriented celebration will include food, drink, games, and inspiring speeches, all culminating in a march at 5 p.m. in honor of the civil rights pioneer.
Rev. Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his work in the civil rights movement. He was assassinated in Memphis in 1968 for his dedication to this cause.
This nation’s elected leaders continue to be challenged to bring forward the realization of Dr. King's dream unveiled 59 years ago, and to demonstrate that these leaders will work toward making the dream a reality by putting the needs of the people first.
Utility Board Member Mona C. Clark accepted the honor on stage along with other members of the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Committee.
“We’ve been doing this for 40 years,” said Clark, “and the main purpose is scholarships to kids that need the assistance. In the past ten years the need has increased tremendously. Last year, we gave out $26,000. This is working for the community, the youth, and the future of Key West.
City offices will be closed on January 20th in honor of the national day of remembrance for Dr. King.

It’s time to renew your Residential Parking Permit for Old Town. The stickers will help ensure marked residential parking spaces are reserved for residents.
If you already have last year’s permit, you can renew it easily online at https://cityofkeywestpermits.rmcpay.com or stop by the rear entrance City Hall 1300 White Street Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
After October 31st last year’s permits will no longer be valid for parking in the spaces marked "Residential" in the historic neighborhoods, nor will they grant the 4-hour free parking credit (one time per day) in select City lots.
This year's Residential Parking Permit is proud to display the image of City Hall and will be mailed to your address on file when you apply or renew online.
The permits cost $39.13 for a full year of parking. Applicants will need to upload proof of residency, a valid driver's license, and vehicle registration to qualify for a residential permit.
In addition to ensuring that residents can park in the marked residential spaces, the permit allows for free parking for up to four hours, one time per day, by redeeming that time at the pay station or in the app. The free extra parking is available in the following lots:
• Fire Station #2 in the 600 block of Simonton – Zone 33054
