One of our favorite Dolly Parton mottos? “Never leave a rhinestone unturned.” This strawberry squid took that to heart. 💖

As we pay tribute to a true original, this little squid is a good reminder that flair can be found in even the darkest parts of our ocean. And like Dolly, some things are just meant to sparkle! ✨

Looking back at her iconic career, Dolly even had a few fish-themed songs: She sang “Something Fishy” on her 1967 debut studio album, and “Fish Out of Water” and “Fisherman’s Song” in later years. Thank you, Dolly, for sharing your heart and talent with the world. 🐟 🐟 🐟

This new antenna on the roof of The Sanctuary might not look like much, but it is playing an important role in a nationwide effort to protect the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale.

With this addition, The Sanctuary joins a network of historic lighthouses and buildings along the East Coast housing StationKeeper. Developed by MotionInfo in collaboration with the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and the International Fund for Animal Welfare inc, StationKeeper utilize AIS (Automatic Identification System) technology to monitor vessel speeds in federally protected waterways.

When whales are detected near an over speed vessel, a NOAA-approved advisory lands on the navigational equipment alerting the crew to reduce speed. With only an estimated 380 North Atlantic Right Whales remaining, these measures are essential to help prevent boat strikes— a leading cause of death and serious injury for right whales.

North Atlantic Right Whales are currently inhabiting their feeding grounds further north. But in November they will begin to migrate into our coastal waters, where the warm, shallow environment offers ideal conditions for calving and nurturing their young. We look forward to sharing updates about this new equipment and the important work being done to help protect North Atlantic Right Whales as they enter our waterways later this year.
