We’ve been getting a lot of questions asking, “Are all the beaches gone on Maui?”

The answer is no. 🌺

Hurricane Lowell definitely caused significant erosion and debris along parts of South Maui, including Kihei and Wailea, and those areas will need some time to naturally clean up and replenish. Beaches are constantly changing, and sand moves with storms, swells, currents and changing ocean conditions.

At the same time, many beaches around Maui are still absolutely beautiful. West Maui, from Airport Beach up through Napili and Kapalua, did not see the same level of erosion and debris, and the North Shore was also much less affected. We spent the day at one of our favorite North Shore beaches today and enjoyed beautiful golden sand, clear water and a gorgeous Maui beach day. ☀️🌊

We also want to be sensitive to what Kauaʻi is going through right now as recovery continues there. Our hearts are with the residents and businesses dealing with the impacts of the storm.

But if you already have a Maui trip planned, there is no reason to assume “all the beaches are gone” or that you won’t be able to enjoy the island. There are still so many beautiful beaches and places to explore while the more heavily impacted South Shore areas recover.

And if you’re visiting soon and want to give back, there have also been community beach cleanup days happening around the island. It’s a wonderful way to spend a little time helping care for the place you came to enjoy. 💛

Maui is still Maui, and there is plenty of beauty here to experience on the beaches and throughout the island.

“Should I cancel our Maui trip?”

I keep getting that question, and I keep seeing it on social media.

The short answer: Please don’t. ❤️

I’ll tell you why below, but before I get to that, I will say this...

If you have Kauaʻi travel plans in the next 30 to 60 days, consider pivoting to Maui while Kauaʻi has time to recover, restore power, clear roads, and clean up from the storm.

Maui is open.

Yes, powerful swell impacted parts of our South and West shores, especially Kihei, Wailea and Lahaina. Some beaches saw coral, driftwood and debris pushed onto the shoreline.

But cleanup is already happening, and the ocean will continue doing what it does naturally: moving sand, filtering water, and reshaping the shoreline.

Will every beach look perfect overnight? No.

Is there any reason to cancel a Maui vacation? No.

There is still so much to do here, including:

🌄 Haleakalā National Park
🌊 Hōʻokipa
🌳 Ziplining
🥬 ʻOʻo Farm tours
🥕 Farmers markets
💦 Twin Falls

🐠 Maui Ocean Center
🔥 Old Lahaina Lūʻau
🌺 South Maui Gardens
🌿 ʻĪao Valley
💆 Maui’s incredible spas, including the Grand Wailea Spa

And Maui’s North Shore was not impacted in the same way as portions of the South and West sides.

Most importantly, your visit matters.

Our restaurants, shops, activity companies, farmers, artists, guides, cleaners and other small businesses depend on visitors. Supporting them helps support local families and allows those businesses to continue giving back to the community.

At the same time, we absolutely want to make sure we are supporting our neighbor island communities. Kauaʻi will need support as it recovers, and there are a variety of ways to help, especially through donations to reputable local organizations and relief efforts.

Supporting Kauaʻi and supporting Maui are not mutually exclusive.

While you’re here on Maui, you can support our local community by choosing locally owned businesses, volunteering when opportunities are available, and most importantly, respecting the people and the land.

Travel with care. Spend locally. Give back when you can. Be mindful of the places you visit and the people who call them home.

So keep your Maui plans.

And if you were headed to Kauaʻi soon, consider pivoting to Maui and saving Kauaʻi for another trip when the island has had more time to repair and reset.

Kauaʻi deserves the time and space it needs right now.

Maui is ready to welcome you, and your visit will mean more to local businesses than you may realize. ❤️🌺

Hurricane Lala Update: South Maui definitely caught a bit of a break today compared to other parts of the island. 🌴🌀

Here in Kihei/Wailea and farther south, we saw little to no rain for much of the day, with just some periods of gusty winds.

And meanwhile… the surf was firing in some spots. 🌊 🏄

One of the bigger impacts we saw was a massive kiawe tree that came down across Makena Road, blocking the road for several hours. Huge shoutout to the folks who jumped into action with chainsaws and started working to clear the large branches, especially with vehicles stuck on the other side. That’s Maui community in action. ❤️🤙

After all of that, the day somehow wrapped up with an incredible sunset and beautifully calm seas. 🌅 One of those very Maui moments where you almost wouldn’t know there was a storm nearby.

Tonight, though, the rain has started picking back up… so we’ll see what the overnight hours bring. 🌧️

For now, we’re staying prepared, keeping an eye on conditions, and feeling grateful for another beautiful Maui sunset. 🌺

“How’s the weather on Maui right now?” 🌴🌀

We’ve been getting lots of thoughtful messages from friends, family, and guests arriving soon asking how things are looking as Hurricane Lala approaches the islands. 💛

Well… according to Maui’s highly sophisticated coconut weather station 😂🥥:

The coconut is wet.
The coconut is moving.
But most importantly… the coconut is still there. 🙌

📍This particular coconut report comes to you from Kahului.

The real answer, though, is: it depends where you are on Maui!

It’s definitely windy pretty much island-wide, but conditions have been very different depending on location. Upcountry in Kula and around Maʻalaea Harbor, we’ve seen much stronger winds and heavier rain, while here in Kihei/Wailea it’s mostly been gusty winds with periods of light drizzle so far.

We’re keeping a close eye on Lala and taking the usual precautions, but Maui is doing what Maui does — one side of the island can be getting poured on while another is wondering what all the fuss is about. 🌧️🌤️🌴
