Something to think about. This is the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. On the other hand, King George County is over 306 years old. While King George’s population is now quite diverse in terms of racial background, education, religious beliefs and virtually other demographic characteristic, we need to understand that our founding families were strongly influenced by their roots in lowland Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.
Looking at that history,
The Scots-Irish and Welsh affinity for their land is rooted in a fierce desire for self-reliance, freedom from landlords, and isolation from government authority. This deep connection is defined by three main factors: [1, 2]
Historical Displacement and Land
* The Borderlands: Originating from the volatile Scottish Lowlands and Anglo-Scottish border, these families survived centuries of conflict where holding land meant holding survival. [1]

* Ulster Plantation: Relocated to Northern Ireland in the 17th century, they faced heavy rents and religious restrictions, teaching them that formal legal ownership under crowns or landlords was insecure. [1, 2, 3]

The American Frontier and Appalachia
* Seeking Isolation: When they migrated to America in the 18th century, they bypassed settled coastal areas to avoid paying high prices and living under wealthy elites. [1, 2, 3, 4]

* Rugged Terrain: They settled the rugged Appalachian Mountains and backcountries, choosing harsh, isolated geography because it offered privacy and freedom to govern themselves. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Cultural Identity
* Subsistence Living: They relied on small-scale farming, hunting, and herding, viewing the land not as a commercial asset to be sold, but as a private sanctuary for family and faith. [1, 2]

With this backgound, is there any reason to believe our strong emphasis on working for God, Family, Land and Community would not be first and foremost on our minds?
