The world is still quiet when I step out of the RV. Morning comes slowly in the northern Nevada desert, carrying a calm that settles straight into my chest. The ground is cool beneath my boots, just dirt and brush stretching out toward the faint silhouette of distant mountains.

I kneel at the fire ring and tuck a handful of twigs and a small log into last night’s resting coals. A spark, a few patient breaths, and the flames begin to wake and climb. I add a larger log and set the percolator on the grate. Soon the morning begins to speak: the soft bubbling within the metal pot, the warm scent of woodsmoke rises, the crackle of a growing fire, and the earthy sweetness of fresh coffee drifting into the crisp desert air.

The desert begins to stir along with me.

From the brush, tiny critters search for breakfast, paws skittering lightly through the dirt. A bird calls — one clear note, then another — as if warming up for the day’s first song. Behind me, family and friends in my little camp start to shift: blankets rustling, someone sighing, the quiet thud of feet touching the RV floor.

But for now, it’s just me, the fire, and the thickening scent of campfire and coffee weaving through the cool air.

The sun begins its slow climb over the distant mountains.
First a thin line of gold.
Then a wash of pink.
Then the full bloom of red, orange, and yellow — colors so warm they feel alive.

In the desert, sky and earth are made of the same palette: rust, clay, ember, rose. For one breathless moment I can’t tell where land ends and morning begins.

Steam curls from my mug as I pour the first cup. I sit close to the fire, letting its heat brush my face while the cool morning air lingers at my back. A soft fog rises from the ground, glowing as it evaporates in the newborn light.

This — this is the gift.

And I am blessed to witness it.

I take a slow sip, smiling into the sunrise.
