MYTH VS. FACT SERIES — Mold & Indoor Air Quality
MYTH: If you cannot see mold, your indoor air quality is fine.
FACT: Mold is not always visible. Mold can grow behind walls, under flooring, inside HVAC systems, around windows, in crawlspaces, and in damp building materials. Even when mold is hidden, mold spores may still affect indoor air quality.
Moisture is the key factor. A small roof leak, plumbing leak, crawlspace moisture issue, poor ventilation, or high indoor humidity can create the right conditions for mold growth. Some people may notice musty odors, allergy-like symptoms, coughing, sinus irritation, headaches, or worsening asthma symptoms when indoor air quality is poor.
A clean-looking home can still have a mold or moisture concern. That is why testing and inspection can be helpful when there are musty odors, moisture stains, past leaks, or unexplained indoor air concerns.
Helpful Tip: Keep indoor humidity below 50% when possible, repair leaks quickly, use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and check crawlspaces, attics, and HVAC areas for moisture problems.
