I still see these "popcorn" or accoustical ceilings in homes from time to time, and do recommend removing them if selling your home. Buyers tend to pass over homes that have these old-fashioned ceilings (and possibly hazardous due to asbestos in homes built before 1978). Here are some ideas that may work if you have these ceilings in your home and want to get rid of them or minimize the look.

A great article with real, practical suggestions. I can't think of a buyer that I've worked with that wouldn't appreciate any of these upgrades.

Some of these ideas are quick and simple, where a few others involve a bit more time and effort. Not sure I agree with the barn door idea though, my thought is that those are going out of style (if not already out of style).
