10 Things I've Learned Over the Past 10 Years
Looking back on the past decade in real estate, the lessons that matter most have shaped how I work, how I show up for clients, and how I approach this business.
1. Relationships matter, period.
How you treat colleagues and clients matters. Putting people over profits and doing the right thing, even when it’s not the easiest option, builds trust that lasts far beyond any single transaction.
2. Consistency beats intensity.
Careers aren’t built in one year. They’re built through steady effort, relationships, and showing up even when things feel slow.
3. Your reputation is your currency.
Every deal, every follow-up, and every hard conversation matters. People remember how you made them feel, and that reputation follows you.
4. People hire you, not a job title.
Your voice, values, and point of view are the difference. Your personal brand is built in the small moments, not just the marketing.
5. Don’t quit your part-time job too early.
Consistent sales matter more than one or two good months. Having a financial cushion early on takes pressure off your decisions and lets you build your business without panic.
6. Learn the major systems of a home early.
Furnace, electrical, HVAC, foundation, roof, plumbing. Knowing the bones of a house saves you money, mistakes, and a lot of stress. Pretty finishes can hide expensive problems.
7. Investors move quickly, but they value loyalty and long-term trust.
When it’s a good fit, working with flippers and investors becomes a true partnership. You learn their rhythm, they learn they can count on you, and you build momentum together.
8. Treat inspections like a classroom.
Inspections aren’t just a box to check. Walking them, asking questions, and paying attention is how you build real-world knowledge about what fails over time and what actually matters.
9. Protect your energy like it’s an asset.
Burnout doesn’t make you successful. Sustainable success comes from learning when to rest, delegate, and say no.
10. Growth changes relationships.
Not everyone moves at the same pace, and that’s okay. Learning to let people be where they are, while still choosing what’s right for you, is part of the process.
