• Protect exposed plumbing by insulating pipes and allowing faucets to drip slightly during extreme cold.
• Disconnect garden hoses and shut off exterior water supplies and irrigation systems.
• Keep thermostats set no lower than about 55°F, even in unoccupied homes.
• Open sink cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.
• Clear gutters and downspouts so melting snow or ice can drain properly. Clogged gutters can lead to ice dams and water intrusion at the roofline.
• If the property will be vacant, arrange for a neighbor, caretaker, or property manager to periodically check the home.
A little winter prep can go a long way. Burst pipes and ice-related damage happen fast down here with so much exposed. Stay ahead of the storm and stay safe out there.
