Beach nourishment is something that a lot of people talk about but many may not understand what it is or how it helps!

Living on a barrier island means the coastline is always changing from storms, waves, tides, etc. This is where beach nourishment comes in… sand is dredged from offshore and pumped onto the beach to help rebuild the beaches.

A wider beach is 👍👍 better protection during storms and a healthier buffer between homes and businesses.

If you ever visit up in Corolla (Carova), NC, there’s a good chance you’ll see the wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs !! and you get super lucky if you see them roaming on the beach like this!

These horses are believed to be descendants of Spanish horses that arrived on the North Carolina coast hundreds of years ago, possibly from shipwrecks or early explorers. Today, they still roam freely along the beaches and maritime forests north of Corolla, adapting to this lifestyle all on their own.

They drink rainwater, eat sea oats/grass AND they can swim! Seeing them is actually super cool.

Most of the horses are found in the Carova area, where the roads literally turn into sand.. like you cant get there without a 4WD car. So make sure you have that if you want to go solo, but if you dont, you can always book an excursion, where a jeep will take you with a few other people.

Carova is also known for its remote beach houses and summer rentals, where people come to vacation. It’s one of those places that feels untouched!

It’s little moments like this that make people fall in love with the Outer Banks lifestyle 🤍
