METHODS OF HOLDING TITLE Part 2 — DID YOU KNOW?

“Tenants in Common” is one of the most common ways multiple people can own property together.

In simple terms:

✔ Two or more people can own the property
✔ Ownership percentages can be equal or unequal
✔ Each owner owns their share independently

But here’s the important part...

If one owner passes away, their ownership interest does NOT automatically transfer to the other owner(s).

Instead, their share typically passes according to their estate plan or through the probate process.

Many people assume co-ownership automatically means survivorship rights—but that's not always the case.

The wording on a deed matters more than most people realize.
